How we think about gardens

Green Yard Design started from a simple frustration: too many gardens are treated as maintenance problems rather than design opportunities. Homeowners spend money on plants and labour and end up with something that never quite looks right — because no one sat down first and thought about the space as a whole.

We do that thinking first. Every project we take on begins with a conversation about your space, your habits, and what you want from your garden. Then we visit the site, look at what's actually there, and put together a plan that takes all of it into account. The design work comes before any digging — and that's what makes the difference.

A garden is not a collection of plants. It's a space — and like any space, it needs a plan before it gets built. We bring the same thinking you'd expect from an interior designer or an architect: proportion, light, movement through the space, what you see from the inside looking out.

We also know plants. Not just what they look like in photographs, but how they behave in the ground: how they grow over five years, what they need in terms of soil and water, which ones work next to each other and which ones don't. That combination — design thinking and plant knowledge — is what separates a garden that looks good for a season from one that looks good for a decade.

We listen more than we talk.

Our process starts with questions, not suggestions. We want to know how you use your outdoor space, what time of day you're out there, whether you want to maintain it yourself or hand it off to a gardener, whether children or animals are part of the picture. The answers to those questions shape every decision that comes after.

We're a small team of landscape designers and horticulturalists based in your local area. Between us we've planned and planted gardens across a wide range of styles, sizes, and conditions — from bare new-build plots to long-neglected Victorian gardens. We've been doing this since 2015.

How we work

Design-led, not labour-led.

Every project starts with a plan, not a price list for labour and materials. You know what you're getting before work begins. That plan is what prevents expensive mistakes and produces gardens that actually work.

Your brief, not ours.

We start every project by listening — not presenting ideas. The brief comes from how you live, what you need, and what the space actually allows. That's the only honest starting point for a garden design.

One point of contact.

You deal with the designer who planned your garden, not a project manager who relays messages. Questions get direct answers. If something comes up, you hear about it from the person who knows the design.
